previous president promotes the possibility of prohibiting prohibitionists

The former president of Columbia harshly criticized the United States’ pursuit of the failed “drug war” in a recent interview on Spanish radio. Cesar Gaviria Trujillo, who was president of Columbia from 1990 to 1994 and subsequently served for ten years as the Secretary General of the Organization of American Sates, said that, while the US refuses to accept the reality that people use drugs, “We cannot be condemned to live in war because the Americans do not want to talk about it.” Trujillo was interviewed in advance of April’s Summit of the Americas, where Columbia’s current president has stipulated […]

survey shows NYPD coppers are fake crime stoppers

A survey performed by a group of public defenders in the Bronx revealed that in more than 40 percent of marijuana arrests that were reviewed, New York Police violated the rights of arrestees by forcing them to empty their pockets for no justifiable reason. The arrestees were subjected to constitutionally prohibited searches even after the Commissioner of the New York Police Department had issued a department wide memo prohibiting the widely utilized, but unlawful, practice known as “stop and frisk.” The “Bronx Defenders” working with the law firm of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP, found that 44 percent of […]

‘lazy’ teachers clock more hours than their critics

Public employees, particularly teachers, have come under attack recently by politicians who don’t want to raise taxes on wealthy supporters who assert that these workers cost too much, work too little and are generally expendable. A study released recently by Scholastic and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation refutes this characterization suggesting that, when it comes to teachers, taxpayers are getting a bargain. The study, Primary Sources: America’s Teachers on the Teaching Profession, found that America’s teachers work longer hours than most workers, averaging 53 hours per week. Many teachers work even longer hours if they supervise extracurricular activities. Teachers […]

tax-hike scare goes up in thin air

A recent study released by an economist from the University of Massachusetts found that one of the scare tactics used by both federal and state lawmakers for not raising taxes and instead cutting back funding of public works and social services is based on a false impression. A review of recent research performed by economist Jeffrey Thompson found that there is no evidence to support the often-employed claim that the wealthy will flee states that raise taxes to pay for public services. The study actually found that the most wealthy tax payers were less effected by tax increases in general […]
